Digitalization as a secret weapon against poverty

A digital bridge to transform Africa from the bottom up
  • A co-working space
  • Computers and Internet
  • Digital skill mediation
  • Inclusion in projects at hourly wages in Europe

= An incredible change in the life of not one person, one family but a whole village

How It all began

According to https://durchschnittseinkommen.net/, the average annual income in Uganda is USD 800 per person (it is probably more like USD 600).  Thanks to my wife, who grew up in Uganda in very simple circumstances, and who regularly spends a month in Uganda with me, I was able to get a much more personal picture of the reality on the ground in addition to this figure.  Don’t get me wrong, the people there, as long as they are not malnourished, are not unhappy, not often even much happier than we are in the western world.  But, when I listen to a girl with shining eyes, who is passionately looking forward to seeing the Eiffel Tower someday, I become painfully aware that this will probably never be possible in her life.

The Emotion

To realize that there is such a large number of people in this world, who even with the greatest commitment, do not have the opportunity to afford normal things for us Westerners, such as unlimited Internet, a modern smartphone or travel, has made me very sad and also angry. How can we allow such a second-class society to exist in the world?

The Idea

So thinking about it, I realized that today it’s possible to acquire all kinds of digital skills on the Internet. If you get really good at one of these skills, you can earn good money even without a degree. I knew that because I myself work with exactly such people in various projects. However, the people in Uganda lack access to infrastructure such as modern computers, fast and above all unlimited Internet and of course the knowledge that and where one can acquire such skills on the Internet.
This was the birth of the Passion Hub. It is intended to become a place that offers people in Uganda a modern place to learn and work, infrastructure, internet and coaching to acquire digital skills and to be able to work on projects of partner organizations. We at the Passion Hub project are sure that if just one person in Uganda earns a European hourly wage, we will not only change his life, or the life of his whole family, but the future of the whole village.

The Vision

Of course, our vision is much bigger than a Passion Hub.  We have already purchased enough land near the main city of Kampala, Uganda, where the first Passion Hub will be located, to build an entire Passion Village.  The Passion Village will consist of different Passion Hubs, which will not only invite to study and work, but also to stay. The students and workers in the Passion Hubs should grow together, support each other and later start their own projects or companies.  In this way, the learning hub can develop into an innovation hub.  At the latest when the first Passion Village is up and running, we want to set up more locations in Uganda and also in other developing countries.  So there is a lot to invest and a lot to do, we are happy about any support!
